go-e is bringing its EV Chargers Ready for New AFIR Requirements and ISO 15118
An important deadline is fast approaching for anyone planning to purchase or install an EV charging station. From January 2027, newly installed or renewed stationary charging stations (Mode 3) must comply with the technical requirements of the European AFIR regulation. The Austrian wallbox manufacturer go-e is updating its product portfolio in terms of software and hardware, ensuring its charging solutions are ready for the future. Under AFIR, Mode 2 charging stations (mobile wallboxes) are not subject to the new requirements.
Feldkirchen in Carinthia, Austria (5 November 2026) – The European Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) establishes uniform technical and operational requirements for electric vehicle charging infrastructure. As of 1 January 2027, newly installed stationary charging stations, including those used in private settings, must therefore support the ISO 15118-20:2022 communication standard, among other requirements. These communication requirements do not apply to mobile wallboxes, which are also part of go-e's product portfolio.
The go-e Charger PRO CABLE and go-e Charger CORE series are already equipped with the required hardware to support the new European standard, as they feature the necessary Powerline Communication (PLC) module. A final software update to achieve full compliance with ISO 15118-20 under the AFIR regulation is scheduled for early December 2026. Already installed charging stations will also be able to receive this update via an existing internet connection. With this update, the PRO CABLE and CORE series will take another step towards implementing Plug & Charge and V2X applications. The hardware is already designed to support these features in accordance with the ISO 15118 standard. However, additional software updates will be required before these features can be used in practice.
The stationary go-e Chargers of the Gemini series (including version 2.0) may still be newly installed and commissioned until the end of 2026. go-e will discontinue direct sales of these models on 30 November 2026. Remaining stock of the current stationary Gemini series may still be available from go-e retailers and installers. However, these charging stations must be installed by the end of the year. In the coming weeks, go-e will provide further information about the AFIR-compliant successor model, the go-e Charger Gemini Fix 3.0. However, support for these standards does not automatically mean that features such as Plug & Charge or bidirectional charging will become available in the future.
As mobile charging stations are not subject to the ISO 15118 requirements under AFIR, all current go-e mobile wallboxes can continue to be commissioned in 2027 without any modifications. Therefore, the go-e Charger Gemini flex series (including version 2.0) will continue to be available in 2027, both directly from the manufacturer and through retail partners and installers.
“With its product portfolio, go-e is well prepared for the new AFIR requirements and will continue to offer customers suitable charging solutions for a wide range of applications: from home charging in single-family houses to apartment buildings and businesses, with or without billing requirements,” explains Christian Philipp, CCO of go-e. In addition to smart charging features such as PV surplus charging, the wallboxes are also equipped with a MID-compliant meter or with a meter compliant with German measurement and calibration law (MessEG), depending on the model. “We want to make the transition to electric mobility easier and help people use energy more intelligently and cost-effectively. This can be managed automatically via the go-e App or our web-based platform, the go-e Portal. We are continuously developing our charging solutions. In this regard, open interfaces that allow integration with third-party systems are also particularly important to us,” adds Christian Philipp.
