Charging a Company Car at Home
Charging a company car at home not only reduces costs but also increases employee loyalty. With the right version of the go-e Charger, various business car charging scenarios are possible. Find the perfect charging solution for employees who are not regularly on-site and an ideal substitute for difficult or costly charging infrastructure installations at the office.
Advantages of Charging Company Cars at Home
Reduces company expenses
Home charging of a company car is more than twice as cheap as public charging. What’s more, not all company buildings allow charger installation, and expanding electrical systems for higher loads can be costly. However, if many employees charge at home, it becomes unnecessary.
Increases employee satisfaction
Company car drivers can charge from the comfort of their own homes and don’t have to search for public charging stations. Besides, it is ideal for employees who do not come to the office every day from Monday to Friday but make a lot of business trips.
Offers more sustainable charging
Smart home charging helps to reduce peak loads in the company and, accordingly, take some of the pressure off the grid. A company can include its commitment to sustainability and innovative practices in its CSR and marketing materials.
What Wallbox Do I Need to Charge My Company Car at Home?
To charge your company car at home, you need to meet certain requirements, which can differ from country to country. In Germany, for instance, an employee must have a wallbox with an MID-compliant meter or, in addition, be compliant with measurement and calibration law (MessEG). In Austria, a smart charging station with a simple meter and RFID suffices, unless the employer requires an MID-compliant meter.
Check the requirements for your country to determine which wallbox best suits your needs. In the wide range of go-e Charger models, you will definitely find one that fits your situation perfectly. For extra convenience, you can do invoicing through one of the go-e integration partners, such as Monta and E-Flux.
go-e Charger: Top Benefits for Employers
Internet connectivity
Whether the employees download and submit the CSV charging log manually or you automate the process, the wallbox must be internet-enabled. Depending on the charging station, the connection can be made via LAN, WiFi, or LTE. For instance, our go-e Charger Gemini and Gemini flex support WiFi, while the Gemini 2.0 series offers both WFi and cellular connectivity. The go-e Charger PRO in addition, offers wired data exchange through Ethernet. This guarantees smart charging and connection to external backend systems at any location.
RFID access protection
RFID authorisation is one way to assure the employer that only the business car has been charged at the wallbox. Otherwise, theoretically, the charging processes of family and friends can be billed to the company. All go-e Chargers come with an RFID authorisation feature.
OCPP and API
The OCPP communication standard makes it possible to manage several wallboxes, even if they are from different manufacturers, within one system. It is particularly beneficial for companies that have several employees charging at home. Furthermore, OCPP is required for automated backend integration and invoicing. The open API could be used for this purpose as well.
go-e Charger: Top Benefits for Employees
PV surplus charging
Employees with PV panels at home can use the excess solar power to charge their car and bill it at the grid purchase price. Surplus charging can be easily set up with our go-e Charger + go-e Controller combo. Another way is to connect the go-e Charger to any other EMS. In addition, some of the go-e integration partners, such as Solar Manager and Clever-PV, offer PV surplus charging setups.
Load balancing
The go-e Charger enables users to set a kW limit in the go-e app to avoid overloading the home electrical system. The combination with the go-e Controller offers dynamic load balancing, which means the wallbox will adjust charging power itself based on how much power other home appliances consume at any given moment.
kWh limit
This is an amazing option for employees who get a flat-rate reimbursement for charging their business car at home. Those whose roads often lie through hilly areas don’t always need 100% battery when leaving the house. A lot of energy can be recovered through recuperation when going downhill. Setting a kWh limit in the app when charging with the go-e Charger will help avoid unnecessary costs.
go-e Chargers to be used for tracking exact energy
Our go-e Charger PRO comes with all the features of a smart charging station, including an MID-compliant meter. The go-e Charger PRO CABLE ME version additionally offers measurement and calibration law compliance. Need help deciding which wallbox to choose? We explain everything in our blog post.
Our smart go-e Charger Gemini flex 2.0 and Gemini 2.0 with a basic energy meter and RFID can also be used in some cases. This wallbox is often enough to monitor the energy used by the employee for charging.

What makes the go-e Charger PRO unique?
The go-e Charger PRO fulfils the legal requirements for the exact billing of charged kWh thanks to the MID-compliant meter and optional measurement and calibration law conformity. The charging station can be installed quickly thanks to the ingenious wall bracket, onto which the charging unit simply needs to be attached.
The backend is used to set up the charging station in no time at all, even when configuring a large number of wallboxes simultaneously. Interfaces such as OCPP, Cloud and Local API, Modbus TCP, and MQTT enable a connection to almost any backend, PV surplus, or load balancing system. This also allows charging processes to be billed and reimbursed using appropriate software (e.g. from one of the go-e integration partners).
For extensive projects, it is even possible to pre-configure the charging stations at the factory to connect to external systems.
Wallbox for employers and employees
Whether for charging a business car at home you need just a smart wallbox or a wallbox with an MID meter, go-e has a suitable solution. To make sure your choice is right, it is advisable to discuss the requirements for your case with an expert.
Charging an Electric Car at a One-Person Company
You are running a company all by yourself?
Being the sole owner and decision-maker brings a lot of benefits, including the simple set-up of a charging station in the office building. All the go-e Charger versions are suitable for your case. We suggest opting for the go-e Charger of the Gemini series, as they are the most affordable solution for cases where no MID or calibration law compliance is required.
The current drawn by the wallbox is included in the total current drawn by the company. Therefore, no reporting is required — it is just another device that consumes electricity, just like a printer or computer, but with a higher power requirement.
