EV Battery Capacity: Is Bigger Always Better?

Kia has noticed something unexpected: while its compact EV2 model comes with two battery options, buyers are choosing the smaller one way more often. Why do EV drivers decide for 314 km of WLTP range when they could have up to 430 km?

Seems like both options have equally strong pros and cons. So the question is, how much EV battery capacity do you actually need, and can you go wrong opting for the biggest one?

EV battery capacity is the amount of electrical energy the battery can store. It's measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Typical EV battery capacity varies depending on the vehicle. For example, small city EVs, like the Renault 5 E-Tech, often have batteries of around 30 – 40 kWh. Many everyday electric cars, like the Kia Niro EV, offer between 40 and 80 kWh. Large SUVs and luxury EVs, such as the BMW i7, can have 100 kWh or even more of battery capacity. 

An EV battery works a bit like the fuel tank in a conventional car. A larger fuel tank holds more petrol or diesel, allowing you to drive further before refuelling. The same applies to electric cars: the higher the battery capacity, the more energy it can store and the further you can generally travel before needing to recharge.

EV battery capacity is usually measured in kWh because this tells you how much energy the battery can store. For example, a 60 kWh battery can theoretically supply 60 kW of power for one hour, or 6 kW for ten hours.

While kWh is the most complete measure, you will often still see battery specs or cell capacities listed in ampere-hours (Ah). The latter only tells you how much charge the battery holds, not the "pressure" or voltage pushing it.

To find the true energy capacity, you need both values:

Energy (kWh) = Charge (Ah) × Voltage (V) ÷ 1,000

For example, two batteries can both have a capacity of 100 Ah but store very different amounts of energy:

• 100 Ah at 400 V = 40 kWh

• 100 Ah at 800 V = 80 kWh

Despite having the same Ah rating, the second battery stores twice as much energy. That's why kWh is the standard unit for comparing EV battery capacity.

The difference between gross and net battery capacity is how much energy the battery can store in total versus how much of that energy you can actually use. Usually, you can see both on EV manufacturers’ websites.

• Gross capacity is the total amount of energy the battery can store.

• Net capacity (usable capacity) is the amount of energy you can actually use to drive.

For example, an EV might have a gross capacity of 60 kWh but only 57 kWh of usable capacity. The other 3 kWh aren't missing. They’re kept as a buffer to protect the battery from too much charge or discharge and help it last longer.

When you compare EVs, net capacity is the number to look at. After all, two cars with the same gross capacity might not have the same amount of energy available for your trips. 

An EV typically has a battery capacity of around 40 to 80 kWh. However, battery capacity depends on the vehicle, and some models fall outside this range. It varies from compact city cars with smaller batteries to heavy-duty trucks and luxury EVs with capacities well over 100 kWh.

Electric cars with the largest battery capacity come from brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and a few others. But a big battery doesn't always mean a longer range. Take the Mercedes-Benz G 580 and the Lucid Air Grand Touring, for example. Despite their similar battery capacities, the difference in range is enormous. Battery size matters, but efficiency, weight, and aerodynamics can matter just as much.

The bigger your EV battery, the more energy it can store. Typically, that translates into more kilometres you can drive on a single charge. However, battery capacity is only half the equation. The other half is energy consumption, measured in kWh per 100 km.

Think of two electric cars: one has a 60 kWh battery and consumes 15 kWh per 100 km. The other has a larger 80 kWh battery but consumes 25 kWh per 100 km.

Driving range (km) = Battery capacity (kWh) ÷ Energy consumption (kWh/100 km) × 100

• 60 kWh ÷ 15 kWh/100 km × 100 = 400 km

• 80 kWh ÷ 25 kWh/100 km × 100 = 320 km

As you can see, in this example, the car with the smaller battery can travel further.

No, a bigger EV battery isn't always better. While it generally offers more range and fewer charging stops, the extra capacity also increases the purchase price and vehicle weight. Whether a larger battery is worth the investment depends mainly on how far you usually drive and how easily you can charge your EV.

If you mostly use the car to drive to work, go grocery shopping, and take the occasional weekend trip, a smaller battery with a capacity of 30 - 40 kWh could be perfectly fine, especially if you can charge regularly at home or at work. But if you're often on the road for longer trips or charging points are hard to come by, those extra kilowatt-hours can give you more flexibility and reduce the need for frequent charging stops. To put this into perspective, people in Germany travelled an average of just 15.5 km per day by car, according to 2023 data published by Destatis.

Larger batteries may experience less wear

One potential advantage of larger batteries is that they generally go through fewer full charging cycles over the same distance, which may help reduce battery wear. However, battery aging also depends on factors such as charging habits and temperature. 

More capacity comes with a cost

A larger battery also usually means a higher purchase price. Take the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric in Germany, for example. As of October 2026, the Evolution version with a 40 kWh battery starts at €26,290, while the same trim with a 52 kWh battery costs €29,290. That's an extra €3,000 for 12 kWh more battery capacity and around 100 km of additional WLTP range. Whether the extra range is worth the price depends on your driving habits.

Less battery capacity often means fewer resources used

Smaller batteries generally require fewer raw materials and less energy to produce. This results in a lower environmental footprint during manufacturing. At the same time, CO₂ emissions from battery production are something EV manufacturers are also trying to reduce. BMW says its new Gen6 battery cells have a 33% lower carbon footprint per Wh than the previous generation, partly thanks to recycled materials and renewable energy in production.

Tesla is another example. The company plans to manufacture its own battery cells in Germany from 2027 using a dry-electrode process that eliminates energy-intensive drying ovens. This could reduce the energy needed to produce EV batteries and lower their environmental impact.

For most everyday driving needs, an EV with a battery capacity of 40 to 60 kWh can be enough. However, the right size depends on how far you drive, how often you can charge, and what you use your EV for.

A bigger battery offers more freedom, but the added weight increases energy consumption, meaning you might end up carrying capacity you rarely use. Conversely, a smaller battery is lighter and often sufficient if you have reliable charging in your routine. For instance, if you can charge your EV at home. Simply plug in overnight and start the next day with enough range.

Even without a home wallbox, a smaller battery can still be a practical choice if you have reliable access to public charging stations. In fact, a 2026 Uscale study shows that German EV drivers using public charging actively rely on three different charging services on average. This suggests that even when charging isn't always straightforward, drivers find ways to make it part of their everyday routine.

Short trips and city driving

• 20 - 40 kWh

Your daily routine might be pretty simple: a quick drive to work, a stop at the supermarket, and perhaps a few errands around town. If that's what you mostly use your EV for, a smaller battery could be perfectly fine. Especially if you can charge at home and start the next day with enough energy. After all, around 50 – 75% of EV charging sessions take place at home.

Everyday driving and commuting

• 40 - 60 kWh

A good middle ground for anyone who needs a car for a bit of everything. Driving to work, picking up the kids, shopping, visiting friends, and occasionally heading out of town for the weekend. Depending on your EV's efficiency and how far you drive, you might go several days without charging. And there's little reason to pay for a much larger battery if you rarely need the extra range.

Frequent long-distance travel

• 60 - 80 kWh

Your parents live 250 km away, and you like visiting them regularly. Or perhaps your commute takes you along the motorway every morning, where driving at higher speeds uses more energy than cruising through town. That's when a larger battery starts to make sense. Those extra kilowatt-hours can help you cover longer distances without stopping as often. And let's not forget winter. A journey that's perfectly comfortable in July might require a charging stop in January, when cold temperatures and heating reduce your range.

Very long journeys or high-range needs

• 80+ kWh

Imagine driving through the Alps on your way to a skiing holiday. Beautiful scenery, winding roads, steep climbs... and a car packed with luggage, passengers, and winter equipment. Your EV has quite a bit of work to do. Climbing uphill takes extra energy, and although regenerative braking can recover some of it on the way down, you still need enough range to reach your destination. Add a trailer or long stretches between charging stations, and a larger battery becomes particularly appealing.

Just remember that a bigger battery doesn't automatically mean fewer stops. A large, heavy EV might use considerably more energy than a smaller, more efficient one.

A bigger EV battery generally takes longer to charge, simply because it can store more energy. But battery size isn't the only factor. Charging power and the so-called charging curve also play a role. For example, even if an EV supports 11 kW charging, it won't necessarily charge at 11 kW the whole time. Charging power usually changes as the battery fills up.

The battery technology matters as well. According to Fraunhofer ISI, some newer battery technologies promise to reduce DC charging times from around 30 minutes to just 10 minutes for a 10 – 80% charge. In recent tests, Geely's Lynk & Co 10 and Zeekr 001 charged from 10% to 70% in just 4.5 minutes. Their Shendun Golden Battery supports a peak charging rate of 12C, compared with around 2C for many conventional EV batteries. To handle such high charging power, Geely combines advanced liquid cooling with AI that predicts battery temperatures and adjusts charging power accordingly.

Overall, several factors affect charging time:

• Charging power: The more power your EV and charging station can handle, the faster charging can be.

• AC or DC charging: DC fast charging is usually much quicker than AC charging, especially on long journeys.

• State of Charge: With DC fast charging, charging often slows down at around 80% or earlier to protect the battery. AC charging usually maintains a steady speed for longer, slowing down only when the battery is nearly full.

• Battery temperature: Very cold or hot batteries may charge more slowly to protect the cells.

Ultimately, battery size alone doesn't determine how long charging takes. Larger batteries generally do need more time to charge. However, advances in battery technology are making it possible to charge even high-capacity batteries remarkably quickly.

No, a bigger battery does not automatically mean higher charging costs. What matters most is your EV energy consumption. For example, if your EV consumes 18 kWh per 100 km, you'll need roughly 18 kWh to replace the energy used over that distance, whether your battery holds 40 kWh or 80 kWh. Charging losses will add a little extra in both cases.

Batteries lose storage capacity over time as internal materials wear down. This normal process is called battery degradation, and its speed depends on temperature, charging habits, and total use.

But how can you tell how much capacity your battery has actually lost? That’s where the State of Health metric comes in. It measures remaining capacity compared to the original standard. For example, if a battery initially held 60 kWh and its SoH is 90%, its current capacity is about 54 kWh. Diagnostic tools and professional battery tests can help you check your battery's SoH.

Interestingly, despite concerns about battery degradation, range, and charging, EV drivers are generally happy with their cars. In a 2026 ADAC survey of more than 1,000 EV owners, 97% reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their electric car. And 90% would choose an EV again.

You can help maintain your EV battery’s performance and slow down capacity loss by following a few simple charging and maintenance habits.

• Avoid frequent DC fast charging to reduce heat-related battery wear, and use AC charging for everyday top-ups whenever possible.

• Keep your battery between 20% and 80% for everyday use, unless your manufacturer recommends otherwise, particularly for LFP batteries.

• Don't leave your battery empty for long periods to prevent deep discharge, especially if you're not planning to drive for several weeks.

• Protect your EV from extreme temperatures by parking in a garage or shaded area whenever possible, as excessive heat can accelerate battery degradation.

• Keep up with servicing to identify potential battery or cooling-system problems early and prevent costly repairs.
