Electric Cars With Range Extenders: Are They Better Than Pure EVs?

You’re still thinking about the range, aren’t you? Even when checking out EV models offering more than 500 km on a single charge. That’s perfectly understandable — everyone’s driving habits and needs are different.

One possible cure for range anxiety is an electric car with range extender. These vehicles use a small combustion engine to generate electricity for the battery, running on familiar fuels like gasoline or diesel. Depending on the model, a range extender can add another 600 - 800 km to your journey on top of the battery’s electric range.

Still, these vehicles come with a few trade-offs that may leave you wondering whether you actually need one.

A range extender is a small combustion engine that helps an electric car travel farther. When your battery charge runs low or when you activate a specific highway mode, this compact engine starts generating electricity for the battery.

Unlike a conventional plug-in hybrid vehicle, the engine in this setup never drives the wheels directly. The car is always propelled exclusively by its electric motor. Instead, the combustion engine (usually located near the engine bay or under the rear floor) acts strictly as an onboard generator.

Vehicles with this technology are treated as a distinct category of EVs. In automotive blogs and reviews, you will typically see them referred to by two interchangeable terms:

• REEVs: Range Extender Electric Vehicles

• EREVs: Extended-Range Electric Vehicles

This technology isn't entirely new. Early pioneers like the BMW i3 REx and Chevrolet Volt used range extenders back in the 2010s to make up for small batteries and a scarce charging infrastructure. As EV batteries improved, the tech faded into the background, and many assumed it would disappear completely.

Now, it’s making a comeback, especially noticeable in China. The thing is, this solution is super practical for drivers facing long-distance holiday travel, congested charging stations, or a lack of home charging in high-rise apartments. Hence, the impressive statistics: since 2020, the market share of range-extended vehicles in China has more than quadrupled, surpassing 10% of sales by 2024.

In everyday use, the driver usually selects the preferred energy mode in the car’s infotainment system or drive settings. Depending on the model, the driver may ask the car to save battery charge, use electricity first, or let the range extender start automatically when the battery drops below a preset level.

Many modern REEVs can cover roughly 80 to 200 km on battery power alone, while larger or newer models may offer more. On long journeys, the range extender can then add several hundred more kilometres, often around 600-800 km depending on the model, tank size, weather, speed, and driving style. In general, some range-extender EVs can reach around 1,000 km on a full battery and a full tank of fuel.

Range extenders exist to solve two of the biggest barriers to EV adoption: limited charging infrastructure and range anxiety. Drivers get to enjoy electric use in daily life and keep the flexibility of a backup energy source for long-distance travel. 

The concept has become especially popular in China, where charging infrastructure outside large cities still needs more work. In 2023 alone, around 623,000 range extender vehicles were sold there. 

Range extender EVs could be viewed as a transitional technology when switching to fully electric driving. Their concept isn’t really that different from a plug-in hybrid. The only distinction is that the combustion engine charges the battery rather than driving the wheels. 

Why range extenders may become less necessary over time:

• Battery energy density continues to improve

• Fast charger networks expand at a rapid pace

• Charge times get shorter

• Larger BEV ranges become more affordable

• Governments favour zero-emission vehicles more and more

Still, range extenders may remain useful even after pure EVs dominate the market. This is especially true for vehicles that need long range, high tow capacity, or reliable use in areas with poor charger access. Larger SUVs, pickup trucks, commercial vehicles, and rural drivers are good examples. 

The main advantage of an REEV is flexibility. Drivers can complete most everyday journeys electrically, but still have a backup energy source when charging options are limited or a trip becomes longer than expected. All benefits at a glance:

• Significantly longer total driving range

• Greater flexibility on road trips

• Reduced dependence on fast charging

• Smaller battery can reduce weight and resource use

Like plug-in hybrids, they still use a combustion engine, so they are only better for the environment if drivers charge them often. If drivers mainly use the engine, fuel use and emissions stay high. Full overview of disadvantages:

A range extender reduces dependence on public charging infrastructure because drivers can continue a trip even when no charger exists within the next 20 or 40 km. That extra flexibility matters quite a lot, especially outside large cities where charger access can still feel a bit like a treasure hunt with very questionable clues.

At the same time, REEVs still depend heavily on charging for efficient everyday use, since most daily travel is supposed to happen in electric mode. The good news is that drivers do not have to rely only on public chargers. They can also recharge at home with a wallbox such as the go-e Charger, which makes daily use much simpler and a lot more convenient. Honestly, home charging is one of the nicest parts of EV life.

Those who rarely plug in their REEV may use far more gasoline than originally planned and treat the car more like a conventional hybrid. At that point, the “electric” part of the concept starts to lose some meaning. Full EV drivers don't have that option, nor do they usually want it. For many of them, the leap to 100% electric is rarely just about technology or convenience. It’s a deeply personal decision rooted in sustainability — a commitment to reducing emissions and driving toward a cleaner future.

Range extender EVs are best suited for drivers who want electric driving for daily use but are not fully comfortable relying only on charging infrastructure. They particularly appeal to people who regularly travel long distances or live in regions where charging access remains inconsistent.

To understand how an REEV performs against a pure EV, it helps to look at different real-world situations rather than brochure numbers. Because, as every driver knows, official range figures and actual road trips do not always share the same sense of reality.

Scenario A: The Daily commute (under 100 km)

In daily use, both vehicle types feel almost identical. Since most daily trips stay well below 50 to 200 kilometres, an REEV operates purely on electricity. The combustion engine stays off, and drivers enjoy the same quiet and smooth experience as in a pure EV.

For short commutes, school runs, grocery trips, or city traffic, most drivers would barely notice a difference. Especially with home charging through a wallbox such as the go-e Charger, daily use becomes very convenient. Plug in at night, wake up with a full battery — simple enough.

Scenario B: The spontaneous road trip (500+ km)

This is where the two concepts start to separate.

A pure EV driver usually needs to plan charging stops. In addition, during peak travel periods, a charger may occasionally be occupied, although this is becoming less of a concern as charging networks expand. Since modern electric cars can bascially take care of the planning for you, there’s barely any extra effort required compared to an ICE or hybrid driver.

Still, an REEV driver gets a bit more flexibility. Once the battery drops below a certain level, the onboard generator automatically starts and helps maintain battery charge. The trip continues without charging stops or route changes. Nevertheless, on a 500 km journey, most drivers would take a break after around two and a half to three hours anyway, and a 15- to 20-minute fast-charging stop can already be enough for many EVs.

If both fuel and electricity run low, a short stop at a conventional gas station solves the problem within minutes. In this case, charging an REEV would rarely be the preferred option, as it is often slower than charging a fully electric car. Although refuelling may seem practical due to its speed (albeit not at all environmentally friendly),, it is not always a decisive advantage over a pure EV: depending on the model and charger, a fast-charging stop may only take a little longer.

While in China, REEVs are about 10% cheaper than pure-electric alternatives, the situation in Europe is the opposite. For example, the Leapmotor B10 EV costs €28.990 while the starting price for the Leapmotor C10 REEV is €37.990. Both are mid-sized family SUVs and share the same interior, tech, and chassis.

Electric cars with range extender are eligible for subsidies in some European countries. Also in China, they are highly supported, qualifying for green car tax exemptions and favourable registration policies due to their massive popularity.

Currently, there are just a few REEV models available in Europe. They include Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV, Leapmotor C10, BMW i3 REx and FORTHING 5 / 7. In the meantime, in China, REEVs' market share is predicted to reach between 10 and 15%. 

The Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV offers an all-electric WLTP range of 85 km. The battery can be fully recharged in approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes using an 11 kW wallbox with the standard three-phase AC charger like the mobile go-e Charger Gemini flex 2.0. DC fast charging is supported as well. For longer journeys, a rotary-engine-powered generator produces electricity when needed. It extends the total driving range to up to 680 km, depending on driving conditions and driving style.

This REEV provides a pure electric WLTP range of 145 km and a combined total range of up to 970 km. The battery can be charged from 30% to 80% in just 18 minutes using DC fast charging (28.4 kWh battery). That, of course, sounds quick in isolation. But if you take, for instance, the Hyundai IONIQ 5, which can charge from 10% to 80% in less than 18 minutes (58 kWh battery), you'll see that it adds substantially more kilometres in a similar charging window.

You can choose one of four energy modes that determine when the combustion engine supports the battery system. It ranges from mostly electric driving to continuous engine-assisted operation with active battery recharging while driving.

The BMW i3 REx, now only available on the used-car market, combines a compact electric drivetrain with a small range-extender generator for additional flexibility. It offers a WLTP range of approximately 204 km in electric operation. The range extender delivers an electrical output of 23.5 kW, which supports extended driving once the battery charge is low. While the generator alone cannot sustain the vehicle’s maximum speed of 150 km/h continuously, speeds of around 110–120 km/h are possible depending on power demand. Higher speeds can still be achieved as long as the battery provides additional power support.

The FORTHING 5 offers up to 186 km of electric range (WLTP) from its 28.4 kWh battery. It supports fast charging, with a 30% to 80% charge taking around 30 minutes. That is enough for many daily routines, whether it's commuting to work, taking the kids to school, or running errands around town. And when longer trips come up, the range extender provides extra reassurance.

REEVs might not be a good choice, because they still need gasoline. They also pack more weight, more parts, and more hassle under the hood. If drivers barely charge them, emissions increase fast. 

• Persistent fossil fuel reliance

REEVs still lean on an internal combustion engine for extra range, so they never fully cut ties with fossil fuels. Drivers still stop at gas stations, still deal with fuel costs, and still watch oil prices jump around for no good reason. 

• The “compliance loophole” problem

Critics often point out that REEVs depend heavily on driver habits. If someone rarely plugs in, the car turns into a heavy gasoline machine with worse real-world emissions than ads suggest.

• Extra technical complexity

A REEV combines two propulsion systems in a single vehicle: an electric drivetrain and a combustion-powered generator. While this offers greater flexibility, it also means more components, such as the engine, fuel system, and exhaust, that can potentially require maintenance or repairs over time.

• Ongoing maintenance needs

One huge benefit of a pure EV is less maintenance. REEV owners lose part of that advantage because the gas engine still needs care. Oil changes, spark plugs, emission checks — all the expensive things return. 

• Efficiency drawbacks

When the range extender is activated, fuel is converted into mechanical energy, which is then used to generate electricity that powers the electric motor. That chain wastes energy at each step. Compared to a pure EV, efficiency drops quite a bit.

• Weight and space issues

That backup engine adds extra mass even during short trips where the car runs only on battery power. More weight hurts electric efficiency and can eat into the cabin or trunk room, too.
