C-V2X Explained: The Technology That Lets Your Car See Around Corners

Every year, about 1.19 million people die in road crashes. That’s the same as losing more than 3,200 people a day, or roughly two lives every single minute.

Many of these tragedies happen because drivers can’t see what’s happening beyond a curve, behind another vehicle, or a few intersections ahead. Yes, road signs warn us about potential dangers like slippery surfaces during snowy weather. But they don’t help predict the dynamic behaviour of other road users.

This is the gap that C-V2X is designed to fill. It allows vehicles, pedestrians, and road infrastructure to communicate instantly. But don’t get your hopes high - read on to find out why.

V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) is a wireless communication system that enables vehicles to exchange information with their surroundings. C-V2X is one implementation of this communication concept.

In this blog post, we use the term V2X exclusively for this communication layer, not for bidirectional energy use cases such as V2G, V2H or V2L. Those bidirectional charging functions depend on the V2X communication network to operate, but they are not part of the communication technology itself.

C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything) is a technology that enables vehicles to exchange information not only with other vehicles but also with traffic lights, road infrastructure, and even people with smartphones.

C-V2X allows vehicles to communicate with:

• other vehicles (V2V)

• traffic infrastructure (V2I / V2R)

• pedestrians and cyclists (V2P)

• mobile networks and the cloud (V2N)

C-V2X is defined by the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), the global standards body behind 4G LTE and 5G. This ensures that C-V2X behaves consistently across different vehicles, countries, and mobile networks.

Before C-V2X, many early V2X pilots used DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range Communications), a Wi-Fi-based technology. DSRC proved that wireless road-safety communication is possible. However, C-V2X offers higher reliability, better range, and greater performance in dense traffic.

The idea behind C-V2X is to make driving safer and more predictable. In practice, this means a car can automatically share information (anonymously) about its position, speed, or a sudden braking event with nearby vehicles, traffic lights and even pedestrians. Other cars with the same functionality can receive this information and react early. For instance, with C-V2X, you can see an emergency vehicle long before you hear the siren.

C-V2X combines two types of communication: one that enables vehicles to communicate directly with each other (V2V) without relying on cellular coverage, and another that connects vehicles to the mobile network (V2N) using the cellular Uu interface*.

* Standard radio link between a device (such as a vehicle or smartphone) and the mobile network. It enables communication with cell towers for services like data exchange, cloud access, and network-assisted functions.

This is a fast, short-range connection that lets nearby road users share safety information instantly. It doesn’t require mobile coverage. The PC5 interface* typically works over distances from about 100 meters up to 1 km.

It could be used for the following situations:

• A car ahead brakes sharply

• A vehicle is stalled behind a blind curve

• A traffic light communicates its signal phase

This channel is designed to work at high speeds and in dense traffic, unlike cellular connectivity, which might come with a few-second delay.

*  Direct, short-range communication link used in C-V2X that allows nearby vehicles and road users to exchange messages instantly, without involving the mobile network.

V2V communication works without the cellular network. This means that vehicles need built-in hardware that can communicate directly with other nearby vehicles or roadside equipment.

Inside the vehicle, this includes:

• a C-V2X communication module (usually inside the Telematics Control Unit)

• antennas for the 5.9 GHz ITS band

• GNSS/GPS for accurate positioning

• ITS software stack that can create and interpret standardised safety messages (e.g., position, speed, braking)

On the infrastructure side, cities need Roadside Units (RSUs) placed at intersections, traffic lights, or along highways. RSUs broadcast information such as:

• signal phases

• lane topology

• construction zones

• recommended speed or warnings

n the network-based communication, the vehicle uses the 4G or 5G network to reach backend systems or other vehicles through the cloud. Its reach is essentially the full coverage area of the mobile network.

This is useful for:

• traffic forecasts

• hazard information from far ahead

• an electric vehicle pre-communicating with a charging station

For long-range communication, vehicles need:

• a 4G/5G modem to connect to the cellular network

• a data connection to access cloud or backend services

Mobile networks (4G/5G) must support the V2X features that allow:

• traffic and hazard information to be shared over large distances

• updates from backend systems to reach vehicles

• cloud applications such as traffic forecasting, OEM cloud services, or coordination with charging stations

V2X includes several communication “directions,” depending on who the vehicle is interacting with. Vehicles need different C-V2X modes depending on the situation.

Cars share information directly with each other.

Useful for:

• when the car ahead suddenly brakes

• vehicles merging into your lane

• collision avoidance at intersections

• slippery road warnings

Communication between vehicles and road equipment, such as traffic lights or signs.

Useful for:

• traffic light phase information (e.g., “green in 7 seconds”)

• road works or blocked lanes

• speed recommendations

• bus or emergency vehicle prioritisation

Vehicles exchange data with cloud services via the mobile network.

Useful for:

• traffic management

• long-range hazard information

• real-time navigation improvements

• over-the-air updates

Cars exchange information with pedestrians or cyclists via phones or wearable devices.

Useful for:

• detecting a pedestrian crossing behind a parked van

• alerting a cyclist to an approaching turning truck

C-V2X improves road safety and traffic flow by warning drivers about traffic jams, upcoming construction zones and approaching emergency vehicles. It can help to navigate at blind intersections, signal hidden hard braking, and enable truck platooning with synchronised instant reactions.

It’s 7:30 a.m., and you’re driving to work. Perhaps you’re thinking whether or not you should get a second coffee when you arrive, or your mind is busy with something else. Suddenly, your car warns you that there’s a traffic jam just beyond a curve. This isn’t something you encounter every day, so without the warning, you’d probably continue driving at your usual 100 km/h and end up needing to brake suddenly. Instead, you slow down gradually, long before you can actually see the stopped cars. It works similarly to a construction zone beyond a curve that you haven’t expected to be there.

You’re driving home, thinking about what to cook for dinner. The traffic is pretty dense. Your dashboard starts flashing: “Emergency vehicle approaching.” You don’t see or hear anything yet since the ambulance is still relatively far away. However, the alert tells you exactly which lane to clear. You move to the right or left without the extra stress you would have felt if you had to react only once the ambulance was right behind you.

You roll up to a busy intersection, squeezing a quick errand into your morning. Just as you’re about to turn right, your car alerts you that a cyclist is coming from the side, completely hidden behind a parked van. Even if you’ve been driving for less than a year, you’ve probably been in situations where someone appears out of nowhere. With C-V2X, moments like this feel much calmer. 

Several trucks can drive closely together in an organised, automated formation. This can make the lives of those on the road for eight hours much easier. The lead truck simply sets the speed, and the following trucks react instantly through direct C-V2X communication, without relying on human reaction times. If the lead truck brakes, all other trucks in the platoon do so simultaneously.

As AI becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives, it's easy to see how people begin to rely on technology almost blindly. Think of the last time you saw a message ending with something like, “If you want, I can also create an even snappier version. Should I do that?” that someone forgot to delete. 

Once people know that technology can assist them, whether in writing or driving, they may become too dependent on it. This could mean that drivers start paying less attention to the road and trusting the car’s intelligence to handle every situation. 

Furthermore, you may also face information overload. When a vehicle is bombarding you with warnings such as road works, blind-spot signals, and more, you might feel overwhelmed.

C-V2X protects privacy by regularly changing identifiers, uses certificates to verify trustworthy messages, and relies on strong upper-layer security to make sure no one can track or intercept your communication.

Vehicles using C-V2X don’t broadcast personal details. Instead, they send standardised safety messages using temporary identifiers. These identifiers change regularly, so you can’t be tracked over time.

C-V2X relies on public key infrastructure (PKI) digital certificates stored in the vehicle or provisioned out-of-band. Each safety message can be verified. You can be sure that every warning actually came from a real vehicle and not from a bored hacker with too much time on their hands.

C-V2X is developing slowly because of technical complexity, the need for strong security and exhaustive testing. Everyone agrees the innovation is useful, but getting all players aligned is the hard part, as it is with many other emerging technologies, including bidirectional charging.

Let’s not forget that the main purpose of a car is to get you from point A to point B. Adding expensive, advanced technology might make it safer, but it can also create new problems. For example, a more complex system is easier to break. If a single wire gets disconnected or damaged, the whole system might stop working, and the car could lose a lot of its value.

What happens if something goes wrong during truck platooning (e.g. a system bug) and an accident occurs? Who is responsible? The manufacturer? They won’t be eager to take on that liability. Making the driver responsible makes even less sense. This is the same issue that has been debated since self-driving cars first appeared, and there’s still no clear solution.

Cars in motion need a shared time base to communicate correctly. C-V2X depends on accurate GNSS-based timing and precise position exchange. That’s how it helps avoid collisions and interpret messages reliably. If timing is even two or three seconds off, a vehicle could misjudge how close another car really is.

V2X messages come with many optional elements and detailed data fields. All this data must be encoded, decoded and validated consistently across different manufacturers and software stacks. One vehicle misinterpreting an optional field could create confusion in the system. This slows down development because every implementation needs a lot of testing.

If, when you heard about C-V2X, your first thought was “So, we all can be tracked?!”, we understand the concern. To make sure the system works anonymously and to prevent spoofing and tampering, safety messages must be signed and authenticated. Vehicles need certificates, proper key management and consistent security handling that works across all vendors.

C-V2X enables safety-critical features. Therefore, development requires deep lab testing, field trials, non-line-of-sight evaluations and congestion simulations. The integration chain includes chipsets, OBUs, RSUs, GNSS timing, message stacks and network components. This level of testing is necessary, which slows overall progress.

Car manufacturers are struggling to balance innovation with cost management. That’s why the financial aspect becomes a showstopper for many modern technologies, such as, for instance, inductive charging. Preparing vehicles for C-V2X would require hardware upgrades. This would increase vehicle costs, which is something many manufacturers are not enthusiastic about.

China leads C-V2X with major government backing, rapid 5G rollout, and large smart-transport projects. India expands via metro pilots and rising safety regulations. Germany advances through strong automotive players and early 5G. France grows under EU mobility policies. The UK scales through pilots with OEMs, startups, and telecoms.

C-V2X is now leaving the testing phase in many regions and moving into real, everyday deployment. In China, more than 270,000 production cars already come equipped with OEM-installed C-V2X. To give you an idea of how serious this is, the technology is now part of the 2024 China-NCAP safety evaluations. This means it influences official vehicle safety scores! 

China leads the global C-V2X market with a CAGR* of 44.7%. This is mostly thanks to strong government support, rapid 5G expansion, and large-scale smart transportation projects. Additionally, AI plays a huge role in improving V2X performance. It enables predictive analytics, hazard detection, better routing, and supports higher levels of autonomous driving.

C-V2X pre-installations in China reached about 500,000 units in 2024 and are expected to surpass 2 million by 2028.

The C-V2X market is growing at 41.4%. This development comes from government smart-mobility pilots and the fast rollout of 5G. The country still faces major infrastructure challenges, but local and global partnerships are helping adapt the technology to India’s dense traffic.

Germany records a 38.1% CAGR. Its strong car manufacturers, strict safety rules, and early 5G rollout help drive adoption. Car manufacturers and telecom companies are actively testing the technology.

The VW Golf 8 was among the first mass-produced vehicles in Europe to bring V2V technology to the road. Tests demonstrated that the car receives alerts about stationary hazards, construction zones, or emergency braking manoeuvres roughly ten seconds in advance. Many global manufacturers, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Ford, Hyundai and others, are prioritising V2N rather than short-range V2V communication because it aligns better with 4G/5G deployment and future autonomous-driving strategies. As a result, the market is currently fragmented.

The C-V2X market in the UK is progressing at 31.4%. Just like in other countries, national pilot projects and cooperation between car manufacturers, start-ups, and telecom operators support this growth. Consumer awareness and urban-mobility plans also help the market expand.

The European market for automotive V2X communication systems is set for strong growth within the next 7 - 8 years. We will likely see wider use of V2V and V2N technologies in new vehicles as regulations tighten and 5G becomes standard.

Countries will probably roll out more roadside infrastructure and intelligent traffic systems that can enable coordinated driving and smoother traffic flow. C-V2X will gain greater importance and become closely linked with smart-city projects and new mobility services. V2X will also play a key role in supporting higher levels of autonomous driving, as it provides essential information that vehicles cannot get from onboard sensors and cameras alone.
