E-Trucks Are Taking Over - But Is the Grid Ready?

The European e-truck market reached $3.8 billion in 2025 and is expected to grow to $4.4 billion in 2026. Compared to the $47 billion total truck market, that’s still modest. But the growth shows a clear shift in heavy transport. We at go-e are not surprised, as there are plenty of reasons why the share of e-trucks is increasing. Read on to find out what they are!a

• Zero-emission trucks in many EU countries are exempt from CO₂-based road tolls until at least 2031.

• Premium electric truck models in 2026 boast a range of up to 400 or even 500 miles

• E-trucks convert over 75% of energy into motion, while for diesel trucks, it is only 35 - 40%.

• Grid capacity makes large-scale e-truck adoption significantly harder.

E-trucks are becoming popular due to stricter EU climate rules, quieter city operation, and the development of Megawatt Charging (MCS), which allows drivers to gain hundreds of kilometres in a 45-minute break. They cut CO₂ by 60 - 90%, produce zero tailpipe emissions, and reduce noise in cities.

Electric trucks in Europe come in different types. By size and weight, they are usually grouped into:

• Light-duty trucks – mainly for city deliveries

• Medium-duty trucks – for regional transport

• Heavy-duty trucks – for long-haul and large loads

Heavy-duty trucks are the most popular — that’s why we’re focusing on them here. The Class 8 segment (the heaviest category from a more detailed segmentation, typically trucks over 33,000 lbs) accounts for 46.8% of the market in 2025. Looking at Germany as an example, around 109,000 electric trucks and vans are currently registered. This includes:

• Nearly 10,000 heavy trucks over 12 tons

• Around 78,000 electric vans

• Just over 21,000 small trucks

Light-duty electric vans typically offer up to around 200 miles of range, medium-duty trucks up to roughly 300 miles , and heavy-duty long-haul trucks between 300 and 500 miles, depending on usage, load, and configuration.

If you need maximum distance, these three e-trucks are currently among the leaders in the UK and Europe:

• Tesla Semi (Long Range) – The heavyweight champion, offering an estimated 500 miles of range. With its aerodynamic design, it’s built to handle the longest motorway routes with ease. So far, however, Tesla has deployed only around 100 trucks in pilot operations, and series production has not yet begun. It still needs to prove that the stated range holds up in broader real-world use.

• Volvo FH Aero Electric – A serious game-changer from a traditional manufacturer, delivering up to 373 miles thanks to improved battery density.

• Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 – A great choice for many hauliers. The range of approx. 311 miles is more than enough to get you from London to Newcastle.

No. For most e-lorry operations, range anxiety is no longer a real issue.

By law, drivers are obliged to take a 45-minute break every 4.5 hours. It’s definitely possible to cover that distance with an e-truck that has 300+ miles of range. If the route is well-planned and Megawatt Charging is used during the break, the truck can be recharged rather quickly while the driver gets a cup of hot coffee and lunch.

Another reason to forget about range anxiety is that about 70% of heavy-duty trucks in Europe drive less than 300 miles per day. For these routes, today’s electric trucks already offer more than enough range. Even in winter, when energy consumption may increase by around 15 - 25% in colder temperatures, they comfortably cover typical daily distances.

In 2026, a heavy-duty electric truck costs between £ 250,000 and £ 450,000, depending on battery size. That is typically 2 to 2.5 times more than a diesel truck of the same size and performance class. However, the total cost of ownership is often lower thanks to reduced energy, maintenance and toll expenses.

The purchase price is still the biggest obstacle when it comes to making a choice. But lower operating costs and government support are helping to reduce the total cost of ownership.

Government policies across Europe are accelerating the shift to electric freight transport. These include toll exemptions, purchase subsidies, and urban access restrictions.

• Toll exemptions

In many EU countries, zero-emission lorries are exempt from CO₂-based road tolls until at least 2031. For a lorry driving 50,000 - 60,000 miles 100,000 km per year, that can mean savings of £15,000 - £20,000 annually. Saving such amounts just on tolls is huge. That alone can make the switch look way more reasonable for fleet operators.

• Purchase subsidies

Some governments cover up to 80% of the price difference between a diesel and an electric lorry. This really lowers the risk as it takes away one of the biggest barriers — the high upfront cost.

• Urban access rules

Zero Emission Zones basically make e-lorries unavoidable in some cities. If you want those contracts, you don’t really have a choice anymore.

These measures are reshaping the business case for e-trucks. Incentives lower upfront costs, reduce operational expenses, and create regulatory pressure. This pushes the total cost of ownership closer to, and in some cases already below, that of diesel. At go-e, we view the electrification of heavy-duty transport as the inevitable next chapter of the energy transition.

If heavy-duty electric trucks are going to work for long-haul transport, charging must fit naturally into a driver’s daily routine. Truck drivers have to take a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving. Ideally, that break should be used for charging. No extra waiting. No disruption to the schedule. To make that happen, much higher charging power is needed.

That’s where the Megawatt Charging System comes in. It’s a new global standard designed specifically for heavy-duty vehicles. MCS can deliver up to 1.2 megawatts of power. That’s roughly three to four times faster than the most powerful chargers for passenger cars. For a 40-ton truck, this could mean charging from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes. If this works reliably at scale, long-haul electric transport becomes far more practical.

By 2026, MAN, Scania, Volvo and other manufacturers have already integrated MCS ports into their flagship models. So in practical terms, a driver can grab lunch and come back to a truck that’s ready for another 180 - 250 miles.

The amount of power needed is becoming a concern. One truck charging at 1.2 megawatts pulls as much electricity as a small village (roughly 1,000 households) all at once. And that’s just one vehicle. Imagine five or ten trucks plugging in at the same rest stop during peak hours. Most highway rest stops, or logistics hubs, simply weren’t built for that kind of demand. This is where the real bottleneck appears: the vehicles are ahead of the grid.

Upgrading infrastructure isn’t quick or cheap either. Installing a new transformer or running high-voltage lines takes 12 to 24 months and costs hundreds of thousands of euros. In addition, grid connection approvals can take years.

Instead of waiting for massive grid upgrades everywhere, many fleet operators in 2026 are getting creative. They’re using “buffer” solutions.

Basically, it is a giant energy tank on-site. It slowly fills up from the grid during the day (or from rooftop solar). Then, when a truck plugs in, the battery delivers the huge burst of power needed. This way, the grid doesn’t suffer from having to deliver significant amounts of energy all at once.

This solution is rather supplemental than an alternative. If five trucks plug in at the same time, the system balances the power between them. It makes sure each truck is ready by its planned departure time without ever overloading the local grid.

It works similarly to load balancing with smart wallboxes. For example, the go-e Charger adjusts charging power when multiple household appliances are running (or when more than one car is charging at the same time), so the total power demand stays within safe limits.

To solve the "bottleneck" of stationary charging, 2026 is seeing the rise of inductive (wireless) charging pilot projects. These allow trucks to charge while driving, potentially reducing the need for massive batteries and long stationary breaks. For instance, in Bavaria, a 1-kilometre test section on the A6 uses copper coils embedded under the asphalt to transmit power wirelessly to receivers on the truck’s underbody.

While heavy-duty trucks rely on megawatt charging to enable long-haul transport, electric vans can often recharge overnight using AC wallboxes at a depot.

E-vans typically cover 100 - 200 km per day in urban or regional service. Models such as the Mercedes eSprinter (up to ~440 km WLTP), the Ford E-Transit (up to ~315 km WLTP), or the VW ID. Buzz Cargo (up to ~454 km WLTP) comfortably fit these use cases. Instead of waiting to charge, an e-truck can drive into a swapping station where the empty battery is removed and replaced with a full one. After just a few minutes, the truck is ready to continue its route.

In China, large companies like CATL are actively expanding battery swapping infrastructure for electric trucks, planning to reach 900 stations by 2026. In Germany, companies such as E-Haul GmbH and Big Automation GmbH are working on providing such solutions. If everything goes according to plan, a 500 kWh battery should be swapped in less than 10 minutes.

Several factors are slowing the broader adoption of such an approach:

• Building an automated swapping station is expensive. It requires storage space for many spare batteries and a smart energy system.

• The business case only works with high usage. If only a few trucks use the station each day, the investment becomes difficult to justify.

• Different truck brands use different battery designs. Size, weight, shape, and mounting systems vary. Without common standards, scaling becomes complicated.

• The Megawatt Charging System continues to improve. This means battery swapping might become irrelevant sooner than expected.

Battery swapping makes the most sense in clearly structured environments. For example, when vehicles drive the same routes every day, operate in logistics centres, shuttle between fixed points, or work inside container terminals. In these situations, saving time matters a lot.

By the way, such a system can also help the energy system. Batteries can be charged when a lot of renewable energy is available — for example, during sunny hours when solar panels produce excess electricity. Later, this stored energy can be used when demand is higher.

This works similarly to how electric cars at home can charge with PV surplus power when connected to a smart wallbox like the go-e Charger. The main difference is that, in the case of battery swapping, the stored energy is prepared in advance inside large battery stations for heavy vehicles.

Electric trucks are advanced enough to cover many real-world scenarios. For instance, they can be used for city deliveries, transport between logistics hubs, long-distance freight and services like waste collection and road maintenance.

In cities, electric trucks are often the easiest and most profitable starting point. Yes, despite the significant initial investment. The biggest advantage here is having short, predictable routes with frequent stops. In addition, you can maximise energy recovery through regenerative braking. So, instead of wasting energy at every traffic light, your truck feeds it back into the battery.

Routes between 120 - 250 miles are the "sweet spot" for 2026 models. These routes are usually well planned and time-structured. There is little risk of range anxiety because distances are predictable. Charging can happen at the logistics hub while loading or unloading.

Long-distance transport used to be considered unrealistic for electric trucks, but that is changing. With the Megawatt Charging System, trucks can recharge 250 miles of range during the mandatory 45-minute driver rest period. Charging can now align with legal driving breaks instead of causing extra delays.

Electric trucks make a lot of sense where noise and emissions matter. Quiet operation allows early-morning waste collection without waking up the neighbourhood. Nighttime construction becomes much easier in residential areas. No local emissions. Less noise. Fewer complaints.

Major manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, MAN, Scania, DAF, Tesla, and Renault now offer electric trucks for long-haul, regional, and urban use. They provide models with decent ranges and fast charging options.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks

• eActros 600: The flagship long-haul model with a 500 km range and 800V architecture.

• eActros 400: A newer, lighter variant of the 600 designed for operators who prioritise payload over maximum range.

• eArocs 400: A small-series specialised model launched in 2026 for urban construction and heavy-duty tasks.

International Truck of the Year 2025

The "Efficiency Benchmark" Champion

• A tri-motor setup (derived from the Plaid series) delivers around 1,073 hp (800 kW). The Long Range version offers up to 500 miles of range on a single charge. However, this has only been achieved with around 100 prototypes so far

• Energy consumption is approximately 1.7 kWh per mile, even when fully loaded.

The "Green Truck" Legend

Unlike battery trucks that rely on massive, heavy battery packs to store energy, hydrogen fuel cell trucks generate electricity on the move. Inside the fuel cell, hydrogen reacts with oxygen from the air. This chemical reaction powers the motor.

You’re looking at 10 to 20 minutes for a full tank, which is roughly the same amount of time it takes for diesel trucks. Hyundai’s XCIENT Fuel Cell is an example of such vehicles. It was recently named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2025 for a reason. It is already operating in countries like Switzerland, Germany, and the US.

However, fuel cell vehicles have several serious disadvantages, including a low number of refuelling points and the fact that most hydrogen for cars is currently produced from fossil fuels, which release CO².

An e-truck is worth it if:

• You have access to depot charging or a nearby high-power charging hub.

• Your routes are predictable (even if they are long).

• Your business operates in Low-Emission Zones or serves clients with strict "Green Logistics" requirements.

• You want to future-proof against the escalating carbon taxes that are making diesel more expensive every quarter.

For most regional and mid-haul logistics, Battery Electric is the current champion. It’s more efficient, the infrastructure is better, and the total cost of ownership parity is already here.

Hydrogen and Internal Combustion are settling into their niches: hydrogen for the ultra-heavy, long-distance routes, and diesel for remote regions or extreme cold where the grid isn’t quite ready for megawatt charging yet.

While the range and performance of 2026 e-truck models have reached a tipping point, the hardware on the road is currently outpacing the electrical grid. As manufacturers integrate MCS ports into their flagship models, the challenge has shifted from vehicle capability to infrastructure readiness.

The electrification of heavy-duty transport is no longer a question of technical feasibility. It is a systems integration challenge.

Success depends on aligning:

• Vehicle capabilities

• Charging standards

• Grid capacity

• Energy storage

• Digital load management

• Regulatory incentives

In that sense, the future of e-trucks is not defined only by battery chemistry or motor efficiency. It is defined by how intelligently the energy ecosystem around them is built.
