What Goes Into Testing Wallboxes at P3 Energy Lab?
P3 conducted its tests in a specialised laboratory in Osnabrück. Wallboxes with alternating current (AC) technology designed for home use were examined. During the process, 115 criteria were used for evaluation. The experts considered the perspectives of both installers and end-users.
Detailed installation assessment
The test began with unboxing. At this stage, the focus was on packaging quality. P3 also examined the interior layout of the wallboxes. When it came to the setup, the clarity of operating instructions was analysed. They checked for cable routing space and potential installation challenges. These aspects helped grade the devices based on how easy they were to handle for electricians.
Simulated and real-world charging
P3 tested the wallboxes with a simulator to assess communication with electric vehicles. Additionally, they performed real-world trials with the Mini Cooper SE and BMW iX3. The experts analysed the charging process for interruptions, measured standby energy consumption, and checked the wallboxes for safety features like overvoltage protection.
Smart features and user experience
P3 tested the app to make sure the smart features are easy to use. This included checking Wi-Fi and RFID connections, remote control, access to charging data, and cyber security. They also tested features like compatibility with energy management systems and dynamic tariffs to ensure the device is up-to-date.
